The route described below is applicable during a road closure affecting access beyond Multnomah Falls during the Spring of 2025. The road opens at the end of May ’25 so tours in June and beyond will have a different route available that accesses Bridal Veil, Sheppards Dell, Latourell Falls and the Vista House. This alternate route features Elowah Falls, Upper McCord Creek Falls, Munra Falls, Wahclella Falls, and the Bonneville Dam and Fish Hatchery which are all accessed on a protected bike path. It’s a bit more walking to access the falls on this alternate route but the falls and views are amazing!

Starting the bike route:

Welcome and thanks for coming. Start by turning left out of our driveway and left again at the next two stop signs. Three lefts total, and you’ll shortly arrive at the first stop Horsetail Falls. From there you’ll keep going until Multnomah Falls where you turn around and come back.

Stop One

Horsetail Falls + Upper Horsetail Falls

Horsetail and Upper Horsetail Falls
Type: Horsetail
Height: lower falls 176 feet;
upper falls 60 feet

On the left side of the road you’ll find Horsetail Falls. There’s no bike rack here so just lock the bikes together out of the way or if you’re solo to the weight limit sign on the right hand side of the road across from the falls.

To access Upper Horsetail hike up the trail .2 miles gaining about 190 feet of elevation. You’re hiking to the top of Horsetail and back another 100 yards to an amazing waterfall tucked away that features a cave you can enter while watching the waterfall fall off the edge. A truly amazing feature, well worth the effort.

Ride 2.5 miles West to Multnomah Falls. Park your bikes in the bike rack in the first parking lot on the right, just before you cross the bridge and get to Multnomah Falls. Please do not use the rack in front of the lodge where the “no e-bikes in plaza” sign is located. Please help us out here and park in the right place, just East of the lodge, across the street. Ask the parking attendant or call us if you need assistance.

Return to your bikes and head back East 6 miles for more waterfalls. Just half a mile past where you got your bike you’ll find Elowah Falls Trailhead. Lock your bikes to the chain at the start of the trail or hop on the protected bike path and ride to

Stop Four

Elowah Falls and Upper Mccord Creek Falls

Elowah Falls
Type: Tiered
Height: 213 feet

Elowah Falls
45 minutes plus another 45 minutes if adding Upper McCord Creek Falls.

From the parking area, hike uphill on Gorge Trail 400, passing a wooden cistern that supplies water to nearby homes. Stay left at junctions with the Nesmith Point Trail and Upper Elowah Falls Trail, then switchback down to a bridge over McCord Creek in the amphitheater carved by Elowah Falls. Return the same way. For a longer hike, take the same trailhead to Upper McCord Creek Falls for a total of 3.3 miles.

Ride 3.4 miles East to the Bonneville Dam and Wahclella Falls trailhead.

Stop Five

Bonneville Dam, Wahclella Falls, Munra Falls

Wahclella Falls + Munra Falls

Type: Tiered

Height: 60 feet visible of 350 feet total

Wahclella Falls

1+ Hour

From the Wahclella Falls Trailhead, follow the trail along Tanner Creek past a small dam used by the Bonneville Fish Hatchery. It narrows to a single track, crossing a bridge over Munra Falls before climbing the east side of the canyon. While there are no cliffs, watch for steep drop-offs.

After a short staircase, the trail splits into a loop. Take the lower path for scenic views, descending switchbacks to a bridge near Wahclella Falls. Passing through a grotto, enjoy a full view of the falls before the trail gains elevation and loops back. At the junction, continue straight to return to the trailhead.

Bonneville Dam

30 minutes

Head in and take a left to view the fish ponds where The Bonneville Fish Hatchery raises millions of salmon and trout annually to support fish populations and conservation efforts. Visitors can explore ponds with massive sturgeon, view fish ladders, and learn about the hatchery’s role in sustaining the region’s fisheries.

Ride 3.9 miles West back to your car.
